    Dr. Katherine Horlock graduated with her B.A.E in elementary education and M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Mississippi. She also holds a Ed.S. in educational leadership from Delta State University and a Ed.D. in educational leadership form Belhaven University. She joined the SOE Board of Advisors in Fall 2024.

About Katherine

Dr. Katherine Horlock is a dedicated educator, scholar, and leader in the field of education, with over a decade of experience in teaching, administration, and curriculum development. Currently serving as the Associate Chair and Assistant Professor of Education at Mississippi College, Dr. Horlock has made significant contributions to the academic and professional development of future educators. Her work spans the areas of online education, differentiated instruction, instructional technology, and STEM education, where she is committed to fostering innovative learning environments. Her academic background provides a solid foundation for her teaching and leadership in both K-12 and higher education settings.

Before joining Mississippi College, Dr. Horlock served in various teaching and leadership roles at Jackson Preparatory School, where she was the Chair of the Science Department, a Grade Chair, and a teacher of subjects ranging from Life Science and Physical Science to Engineering Design. She also taught 7th Grade Science at Saint Joseph Catholic School and worked as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Mississippi. These roles allowed her to cultivate a passion for creating engaging, student-centered learning experiences, both in the classroom and online.

Dr. Horlock’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that all students deserve a dynamic, inclusive, and rigorous education that prepares them for success in a rapidly changing world. She has developed and taught several courses, including Educational Psychology, Science for Children, Instructional Technology, and STEM Education. Additionally, she has designed and developed courses such as Differentiated Instruction in Online Learning and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to meet the needs of diverse learners and educators in the 21st century.

In her current role at Mississippi College, Dr. Horlock chairs key committees focused on educator preparation and assessment. She is deeply involved in accreditation processes and reports for the university, working to ensure that Mississippi College’s educator preparation programs meet national standards. She also serves as a faculty sponsor for Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society for educators, and coordinated the Educator Rising statewide conference, fostering future educators’ professional development.

Dr. Horlock has received numerous accolades, including the Pittman Young Faculty of the Year Award in 2023 and the Mortar Board’s Favorite Professor Award in 2024 at Mississippi College. Dr. Horlock remains committed to lifelong learning and professional growth, regularly attending conferences and training sessions to stay at the forefront of educational practices and trends. Her work is driven by a passion for making a lasting impact on the next generation of educators and learners.

What led you to want to serve on the School of Education Board of Advisors?

I am excited about the opportunity to serve on the University of Mississippi School of Education Board of Advisors to continue the mission of preparing teachers who are highly skilled and passionate about making positive impacts in the classroom. As a graduate of the Ole Miss School of Education, I hold a deep appreciation for the values of excellence and community that the School of Education embodies. The professors made an impactful difference in my life and guided me to be an advocate for students and teachers. My own educational journey has inspired me to give back in a way that helps current and future students thrive, both in their academic endeavors and as educators.
