Meet Landon Pollard
What led you to want to serve on the School of Education Board of Advisors?
I am extremely grateful for all the guidance, support, and education I have received as a three time graduate of Ole MIss. I was honored to be asked to serve in this capacity as a member of the SOE Board of Advisors, and I hope that I can give back a small portion of the wisdom and experience that has been passed on to me in my educational career.
Tell us about your favorite professor(s) at the School of Education? How did they make a positive impact on your professional and personal pursuits?
Dr. Susan McClelland and Dr. Tom Burnham both left memorable impressions on me as professors. Both Dr. McClelland and Dr. Burnham not only possessed a strong intellect and knowledge-base, but they both shared valuable lessons from a long career of practical experience as successful school and district-level leaders. I still remember and apply many of the lessons, tips, and philosophies they shared with me as a student, and even after I graduated, they were always willing to advise me anytime I needed them.
Tell us about your proudest moment in education.
I think every educator enters this profession with a desire to see students achieve success. And although it doesn't happen as often as I would like at times, I feel immensely proud anytime I get to engage with former students who share with me their successes after they have left my school. In recent years, I have been able to catch up with former students of Byhalia Middle School where I was their principal. This includes former students who were the first members of their family to attend college (with several of them attending elite colleges or universities at little cost) or former students who have returned to our district as teachers because they had such a positive experience when they were a student with us. I feel great pride anytime I am able to hear about the continued success of these former students, knowing that the education they received in our schools and district may have played a small role in preparing them for life after us.
