What are the benefits of a submarine career?
There are of course the many places you can go, like Australia, and the people you get to work with, but I would say that I’ve noticed two main benefits. For one, submarine officers do everything on the boat. From running the nuclear reactor to tracking submarines, intelligence collection, and ship driving, you will gain a wide variety of skills. The other is the level of autonomy and trust you are given. As the Engineering Officer of the Watch or Officer of the Deck, you are responsible for either the engine room or the whole ship, and are able to run your watch team with a level of ownership not common to other Naval communities.
