Undergaduate Spotlight
What attracted you to the Department of Art & Art History?
I loved the extensive ceramics area, the metal foundry, and the sculpture yard. The department has also been extremely supportive of my pursuit of two degrees.
What type of artwork do you create and can you discuss your process?
I make figurative sculptures. I am currently using tension, gestural lines, and vivid colors to explore the human capacity for connection beyond cultural boundaries. I primarily work with metals such as cast iron and steel, and soft sculpture.
Which artists do you look to for inspiration?
Mary Callery, George Rickey, Lygia Clark, Leiko Ikemura
Which professors inspired you the most?
My instructor for 3D design, Dan Ney, is the reason that I chose sculpture for my emphasis. Joshua Brinlee was the first professor who made me believe I really could be a professional artist. I am also continuously inspired by Brooke Alexander and the whimsy she captures in her paintings.
What has been your favorite class during your years here?
3D design. It’s where I fell in love with sculpture.
Do you have a favorite memory here in the department?
Not specifically, but I absolutely love the iron pours. I remember complete awe the first time I saw molten iron.
Do you have any hobbies outside of the art department?
No this is my life (crying). Just kidding- Yes, many! I have been in the swim club for years and love to bake and cook. I’m also an avid solo backpacker and travel in all of my free time.
Do you have any plans after graduation?
I’ve accepted a position in Milwaukee Tool’s Operations Development Program. It is a rotational leadership training program, and I will work different engineering operation jobs for two years. I’ll likely work abroad during the program. In my spare time I plan to join a ceramics studio or find access to a metal shop so that I can continue my art practices.
