Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?

UM is an hour away from my home, so that was a big appeal. I also loved the campus when I toured it.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

I would tell a student that yes, my major is difficult and you have to study really hard, but it is worth it. I have always found chemistry very fascinating, and I find myself wanting to go deeper. The University of Mississippi is a wonderful place to succeed in my understanding of chemistry and gives me the tools to do so.

Why is your department a special place?

The faculty makes the chemistry department a special place. Every teacher truly wants the best for you and wants to see you succeed. All the professors encourage going to their office hours for help. Developing a relationship with your professors is key to having success in the classroom.

What professor or class has had the most impact on you?

Dr Fortenberry has had the most impact on me as a teacher. He truly loves his subject material and loves teaching. He wishes for every student to succeed and loves helping them get there. He is funny and is creative when teaching in the classroom.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you’d tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

Go to professor’s office hours! Getting to know your teacher makes you more comfortable to ask questions to deepen your knowledge and understanding on the topic.
