Why did you choose to attend UM?

My major, Forensic Chemistry, is what initially attracted me to UM. However, it was the campus that truly pulled me in and influenced my decision. I love the smaller, homey atmosphere of both the campus and Oxford, while still having numerous opportunities and open doors available to me.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

My major is the primary reason I chose UM, as it isn’t offered in my home state and aligns with my future goals. After touring the campus my senior year, I knew that Forensic Chemistry was the path I wanted to pursue. Regarding my biology minor, that decision came more recently. Given the requirements for my major, I realized I only needed to add one upper-level Biology class to earn the minor. Since I was already planning to take Anatomy and Physiology to prepare for medical school, it seemed like a natural fit!

What would you tell a high school student about your major?

Forensic Chemistry is so interesting! You delve into the science of crime scenes, such as examining fingerprints and arson debris. This major requires a summer internship, guaranteeing connections beyond UM and valuable experience in your field of study. Despite its challenges, pursuing this major is immensely rewarding. It fosters a tight-knit community, with professors in the department committed to your success. You've got this!

Why is your department a special place?

The Chemistry Department holds a special place in my heart because it truly feels like a community. Every professor I’ve approached for help or advice has been incredibly supportive. I also believe that SMACS plays a large role in bringing the department together, as it is a great way to volunteer in the community and connect with fellow students who share similar academic experiences. And, of course, Coulter has the best Starbucks on campus!

What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM?

    1. Preparation for the future through summer internship
    2. Small community and helpful professors
    3. Volunteering with SMACS

6. Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?

I believe the class that has had the most impact on me is Organic Chemistry I. Despite its challenges, it quickly became one of my favorite courses for two primary reasons. Firstly, I found the patterns of reactions fascinating; it felt like solving a puzzle. Secondly, it taught me the value of consistent studying and the importance of not cramming all the material right before a test.

What do you hope to do after you graduate? What are your career goals/ plans for post-graduation?

I hope to become a forensic pathologist, which involves conducting autopsies! Following graduation, I will attend medical school, followed by residency and fellowship training.

What is your go-to meal in Oxford?

A burrito from South Depot with a Diet Coke!

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

Looking back, I'd tell my younger self not to sweat talking to people. We're all in the same boat, trying to make friends. Don't be afraid to chat with your neighbors and classmates; having a solid community is super important!
