Why did you choose to attend UM?

Even though it sounds cliche, I chose UM to further my education and career because it felt right. Walking around campus on a tour or talking with faculty, I realized that I was where I was meant to be, and somewhere where I was wanted as well. You will know when something is right for you, a major, a school, or a career path. It will make you excited about the next four years of your life.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

Theatre is something you have to have such drive and passion for! This department is amazing at lighting the spark I have for this career, every day. My professors are so inspiring in every class I have and even just through interactions in passing. People here, faculty and students, are so uplifting in what we want to pursue. There is so much love and support for this difficult career that it makes everything seem possible, and so much fun!

Why is your department a special place?

Our department is so special because of how close everyone is. Every professor knows my name and knows exactly how to help me in my field of study. In the same way, every student knows each other and is super supportive. This is so nice when you first come here because you have a built-in group of friends with the people you have classes with every day. The tight-knit community within the theatre department is something truly special that I wouldn't trade for the world.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

My voice professor, John Carden, is someone who constantly pushes me to get better. Not only does he teach vocal classes and coach me with private lessons, but he also texts me songs to sing that he thinks I would be good at and seeks me out after classes to talk to me about performance opportunities. He cares about me not only as a performer and young artist, but a person.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

After graduation, I want to continue to inspire people. That has always been my goal when performing. As much as I would love to perform on big stages and be someone everyone has heard of in the theatre industry, it all boils down to the idea of performing because I love it. I want that love and passion to inspire others to do whatever it is that they love. My goal is to keep performing with every opportunity given and to do it with the knowledge I have learned here and the love in my heart.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

I would just say to try everything! Go to events in the Union even if it isn't of interest to you. Do all of the back to school functions and the volunteer/ leadership opportunities because they will allow you to feel so connected to this school and the people you do it with.
