She is wearing a red University of Mississippi School of Applied Sciences polo shirt and a name tag that reads "Alison Blackburn." A brick building and campus walkway are visible in the background.

Why did you choose your major?

I originally started out as a Biology major on the pre-med track since I’ve always wanted to go into medicine. But I quickly realized that while Biology checked the boxes, it was not for me. After feeling lost, my advisor told me about Dietetics and Nutrition. I realized that this major was beyond perfect for me. It combined my interest in healthcare with something I’ve always been curious about—how food and nutrition impact our bodies and overall health. What I appreciate most is that this major still supports my path to med school. I’m able to complete all my prerequisites while also gaining a deeper understanding of something that’s often overlooked in traditional medical training. Having this background in nutrition is giving me a more well-rounded view of health, one that I know will make a difference when I’m a doctor. For me, choosing this major wasn’t just about checking the right boxes for med school. It was about finding a subject that keeps me curious and motivated. I feel like I’m building a foundation that’s going to shape the kind of healthcare provider I want to be.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

College is such a unique chapter in your life—make the most of it! Take time to care for yourself, whether that means getting enough rest, going for a walk at Lamar Park, getting dinner at Volta, or simply taking a moment to breathe. Your well-being is the foundation for everything else. At the same time, don’t be afraid to step out and connect with others. One of the best ways to feel connected and fulfilled is by finding a club or organization that you genuinely love. Some of your favorite memories will come from these moments.

What is your favorite spot in Oxford?

My favorite place to eat in Oxford is Jinsei! It has the best sushi and atmosphere! When it comes to hanging out, I love spending time at the Whirlpool Trails. It’s the perfect place to unwind, walk, or run. It’s peaceful and a great break from the busy campus life.
