Meet Amy
What does this scholarship award mean to you?
Above all else, receiving a scholarship award from the University of Mississippi School of Education helps me feel like a valued member of a community of humans who strive for excellence in the classroom every day. The School of Education is a wonderful place, and I absolutely love being a part of it - as a student and a graduate instructor.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?
Truthfully, my husband was hired by the university in 2022. We moved from Pittsburgh, PA, and I knew zero people here in Oxford for the better part of our first year here. I decided quickly that I needed to find "my people" and a purpose in Oxford. I have always wanted to get a PhD, so I applied at age 50! It's been a wonderful year and I look forward to the rest of my program.
Tell us about a favorite memory, professor, and/or academic course during your time at the School of Education:
On the first day of EDRS 701 Statistics, Dr. Rick Balkin walked into the room. The majority of us were nervous about taking the course, but he immediately helped us feel at ease. His first words were, "I'm Rick Balkin, and welcome to my favorite class."
AWESOME Intro.
He is incredibly patient with his students. He's also a great storyteller.

What inspired you to pursue a degree at the School of Education?
I've been working in higher education since 2016. I've been interested in getting a PhD for a while but could not afford to pay for it. The School of Education welcomed me and helped me find a way to start my doctoral studies. I am so grateful.
Tell us about your community involvements and/or hobbies:
I performed in Oklahoma and Music Man at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts the past two summers. I perform when I can, and I take tap dance classes with my husband, Joe, who teaches in the Department of Theatre and Film. I spend as much time as I can with my boys, Owen (16) and Tyler (14). I enjoy running, yoga, and walking my dog Boba Fett. I hope to find a way to tutor some students with dyslexia this year.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to pursue a tenure track faculty position at a university. I also plan to continue working for the Peirce Family Foundation. The foundation focuses on children with dyslexia and teacher training in Pittsburgh, PA. I have worked for the Peirces since 2014, and plan to continue their legacy of helping children and teachers.
