Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose to attend the University of Mississippi so that I could be in a place where I could get the benefits of a R1 research institution while also getting to experience southern culture and hospitality. Here at UM, you get to feel the benefits of a large SEC school while also being in an environment where you will know your classmates and get the opportunity to be heavily involved in many different areas of campus.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

I would tell someone interested in Biochemistry to never lose a sense of curiosity. Whether it be hearing about a new topic in lecture or actually applying it in lab, it is important to approach every day with an open mind. As I continue to progress in my academic journey, it has been exciting to see how each class builds upon the last, making every class feel purposeeful

Why is your department a special place?

My department is a special place because of the instructors. Every professor in the Chemistry Department is there because they love their area of expertise and want to pass it on to the next generation. Many professors have research labs that they open to certain students, and they are practicing what they teach. The teaching assistants and supplemental instructors are also excellent resources to help students succeed.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

The professor who had the largest impact on me is Dr. Amala Dass. Dr. Dass was my professor for both Gen Chem 1 & 2. He was always very willing to answer questions and provided a large number of practice problems that helped us to become extremely familiar with the material.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

After graduation, I hope to attend medical school. My career goal is to become a pediatric oncologist.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

I wish I had known how easy it is to get involved on campus. We have over 400 registered student organizations here at UM, with every student having the opportunity to participate in a club that aligns with one of their interests. While I am now more involved on campus, particularly as an Ole Miss Ambassador, I wish I had done more as a freshman.
