Why did you choose to attend UM?
I chose to attend UM initially because of the scholarship I received. After visiting and seeing the Honors College and Croft Institute, I knew this was the place was for me. I enjoyed the opportunity to see the course offerings and was impressed by the foreign language instruction.
When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?
I chose to be an International Studies major because I have always been interested in politics and government. Croft allows me to pursue those interests in a more global context. Additionally, the opportunity to study abroad also interested me. Since I was a child, I always enjoyed my Spanish courses and that continued into high school. By my junior year of high school, I knew I either wanted to major or minor in Spanish when I got to college. Fortunately, the Croft Institute makes it very easy to major in a foreign language.
What would you tell a high school student about your major?
I would tell a high school student that the Spanish program is comprehensive and that you will receive a well-rounded education. You take courses in linguistics, literature, culture, etc. I think it is important for high school students to know that they will need to put in work outside of the classroom to become fluent in their language.
Why is your department a special place?
This department is a special place because it demonstrates that learning a modern language is more than just studying grammar and vocabulary. It is about learning about groups of people, places, and cultures. I think the comprehensive approach to language study is what makes this department special.
Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?
My favorite class has been Span 397 with Dr. Gowan. This class was about current events in Spanish-speaking countries, and it was very interesting to learn about the different countries and their current events. I was able to learn a lot of vocabulary and practice my conversation skills. I was also exposed to a lot of really informative Spanish media outlets.
What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?
I spent 6 weeks in La Paz, Bolivia, with Dr. Centellas as part of a Fulbright-Hays seminar. This experience was amazing. I had the opportunity to be a part of a research project while also being able to immerse myself in Latin American culture and the Spanish language.
