Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?
Growing up in North Mississippi, Ole Miss was always my school, my team– Hotty Toddy! As an undergraduate, it also became an institution that I respected. The School of Education’s graduate school ranks among the top 50 in the nation, and I knew from my undergraduate experience that I would be challenged but even more so encouraged throughout my graduate degree program at the University of Mississippi.
Tell us about a favorite memory, professor, and/or academic course during your time at the School of Education:
As a non-traditional undergraduate student having three small children, most memories are of night classes on the Tupelo Campus and the wonderful professors who encouraged me there. I am forever grateful for the Ole Miss Tupelo campus. One of my most meaningful memories was when Dr. Virginia Moore asked me to give the graduation speech at our Tupelo campus reception. My first response was, “Me?” As I stood there giving the speech, I remember hoping the ones who supported me along the journey were reflected and acknowledged in the realization of that honor, for I did not do it alone.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation, I want to teach education courses at a university or be involved in consulting or coaching opportunities. My experiences in school administration at various levels taught me my true passion is working with teachers – encouraging them, lifting up the profession, working to ensure their success, and then celebrating it! Teaching is one of the hardest, yet most rewarding professions there is. Support through solid pre-service training, continued educational opportunities, and professional development or coaching is of utmost importance to ensure teacher retention and professional growth. When our teachers are supported and strong, so are our students.
