Meet Aubrey
What does this scholarship award mean to you?
To me, this scholarship means that there are people who still invest in future educators and support their efforts in doing so. My very own family did not support me going into education and that made it very difficult to go against what they wanted, so to know there are still people who invest in future educators' lives means so much. I truly can not explain just how much this scholarship means to me. I am so grateful.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?
Being from Mississippi you either grow up an Ole Miss fan or a State fan, and I just so happened to grow up a State fan. When I went and toured both schools I knew immediately that the University of Mississippi was where I was supposed to be. I fell in love with the campus, the people, and the School of Education. I felt like the University of Mississippi would prepare me the best to go into teaching so that is why I ultimately chose to attend the University of Mississippi.
What inspired you to pursue a degree at the School of Education?
From a young age I have always loved helping people. At 5 years old I would come home from school and play school. When I was 7 years old we found out that my little brother had severe dyslexia. Seeing him cry for hours at night trying to do his homework made me want to become the teacher that would take the 5 extra minutes that one student needed to be able to excel in school.
Tell us about your community involvements and/or hobbies:
I am involved in the college group and missions team at Arbor Grove Baptist Church. During my time at Itawamba Community College I was involved in many organizations such as Indian Delegation Vice President, Orientation Leader, Executive Chair of the food pantry, Educator's Rising, BSU Lead Team, SGA Representative, Instructional Support Leader, Fashion Tribe, Political Science Club, and Social Media Ambassador.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to begin teaching and working on my Master's in Education. I also plan to get my dyslexia certification after teaching for 3 years. I hope to use my dyslexia certification inside my classroom, but also outside of my classroom by providing dyslexia therapy to my area.
