Why did you choose to attend UM?

Throughout high school, I never really had a dream school like some of my peers. I knew what I wanted to be and wanted to make sure that my school offered me the best opportunity to get to that point, but to me, it didn't really matter where I went. When I started looking for colleges that offered what I wanted, I of course came across UM pretty quickly and, to be honest, I was not sure that this was the direction that I wanted to go. However, I applied and scheduled a tour anyway just to make sure that I had seen everything. From the moment that I stepped foot on campus, I knew that this was the place for me. It was the perfect blend of social and academic possibilities, as well as a wonderfully comfortable and beautiful environment. Since starting, I haven't doubted my decision once. I work hard, and I am greatly rewarded due to this wonderful institution that I have chosen. The professors are always available to help in any way that they can. Like with most things, you are going to get out what you put into college. Therefore, I strive every day to work as hard as I can in order to benefit the absolute most. There are undoubtedly other great universities out there, however, UM is dedicated to academic success and community engagement, resulting in you as a student getting the most well-rounded education possible, which is what I love most, and I hope that you too, will enjoy that here!

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

Majoring in Biology, while it does sound basic to some, has been such an eye-opening experience to me in the short amount of time that I have been studying. This major requires that you take science courses that I would have never thought I would be interested in, such as genetics and ecology. This gives you a well-rounded understanding of all different types of life sciences, which you can later specialize in order to focus on what you want to study specifically. For me, that will be human biology, which I will eventually use in my studies to get my MD! I think that the most important thing that you need to know about this major is that it requires a lot of focus and a lot of memorization. However, I find that if you study a little every day, you will be more successful than trying to cram everything into the evening before a test. In addition, you will really learn the information instead of just remembering enough to do well on your test. Actually learning the information is going to be the key to success in this major!

Why is your department a special place?

My department is a special place because it offers such a wide variety of opportunities, leading students to a lot of differing career paths. The graduates coming out of the Biology department could become doctors, professors, hospital coordinators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and so much more. You will learn so much valuable information that you can personalize to follow many career paths. The world needs help from everyone, not just doctors, nurses, or teachers. The Biology department houses a great number of intellectual people from different fields, so that you can gain the most knowledge possible and make the best decision as far as what you want to be.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

So far in my studies, the professor that has had the most impact on me is Dr. Dass. He gets bad reviews at the end of the semester from a lot of students who say that he doesn't teach or that they didn't learn anything from him. While this might be true for them, Dr. Dass's class challenged me as a student to learn outside of class through reading my textbook and dedicating hours to homework and practice problems. He doesn't use any PowerPoints. Instead, he actually teaches and goes through things on the blackboard, which has made it really easy for me to learn. I definitely have to apply myself in his class, but he encourages you the entire way and gives you everything that you could possibly need to succeed. I feel like I am both learning his content and gaining skills that will help me to be successful in classes in the future!

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

After graduation, I plan to apply and, hopefully, be accepted to the School of Medicine at UMMC. From here, I will study to get my MD and then pursue a career as an OBGYN! I have always had an interest in children and women's health. With this in mind, I feel that being able to help both women and welcome babies into the world is a perfect segue and my calling. I am also interested in Pediatric Surgery, so it is another possible option for me!

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

I wish that I could tell freshman me to go ahead and start getting involved in clubs and organizations as soon as possible! Don't be afraid to get on the Forum, join clubs, and email their officers to give them your name and information so that you can really start to get involved! This will help you to make friends and get more involved in your community much quicker than just meeting people in class.
