Why did you choose to attend UM?

I decided to attend the University of Mississippi because I loved the welcoming atmosphere. People always told me I would know where I was meant to go to school. I was skeptical, even after the first time I visited, since it was my first college visit. But after coming back for admitted students day, the feeling never went away. What solidified my decision, however, was the vastness of opportunities and resources presented here.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

Forensic chemistry combines chemistry, biology, and criminal justice all into one major. Majoring in a STEM field can be daunting, but with hard work and determination, it can be extremely rewarding. There are many research and study opportunities available to students as well.

Why is your department a special place?

Having such a prestigious Forensic Chemistry program here at UM, pursuing a Forensic Chemistry degree is not for the weak. However, due to the smaller number of students in the program, a tight-knit community is formed to help support each other. I have many friends and faculty members whom I can rely on to help me through any difficulties.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

I had Dr. Ritchie for General Chemistry 1 and 2. I really enjoyed his class because it was evident that he loved what he taught. He made sure that no one was left confused about a concept and incorporated interactive ways of teaching.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

After graduating, I plan to attend Graduate School and explore more career opportunities. My ultimate career goal is to work in an FBI or state bureau crime lab, working in microanalysis/trace evidence.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

I would tell myself to not be afraid to get involved. I worried, as a more introverted person, I would not find a solid friend group during my freshman year. However, once I started exploring the organizations here, I found other people who enjoyed the same things I did.
