  • Quick Intro

    Castlin is majoring in Forensic Chemistry and minoring in both Biology and Physics. On campus, she is a member of Delta Delta Epsilon, Society of Physics Students, Ole Miss Chess Club, Ole Miss Russian Club, and Ole Miss Mental Health Club. As well as Castlin’s campus involvement, she enjoys volunteering for various community services.

Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?

 The two biggest factors that finalized my decision to attend UM were the community and the research opportunities in the chemistry department. Growing up in a rural town in the delta with a lack of cohesive community, I fell in love with the diverse and accepting cultures and communities in Oxford whenever my dad would bring our family up for a game. As for the research opportunities, my high school chemistry teacher told our class about multiple research programs in the department that sounded amazing to me.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

I am a Forensic Chemistry major in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. When it comes to understanding my major, it can be thought of as majoring in Chemistry, but also learning how chemistry can be applied to forensics. We still do the same amount of work as a chemistry major would, but there will be a few classes that differ when it comes to forensics and possibly a few extra labs.

Why is your department a special place?

The chemistry department is a very special place at Ole Miss. Honestly, I would consider that the department is fairly tight-knit when it comes to faculty and staff. The professors are always supportive of the students and will always be able to work with you. The department is always there to make sure you are on the right track!

What professor or class has had the most impact on you?

 It is quite hard to narrow down a class that had the most impact on me, because so many classes have given me such great learning experiences. I think one of the classes that impacted me the most was Physical Chemistry with Dr. Fortenberry. P-chem was one of the classes where I really struggled to understand the concept, but when meeting with Dr. Fortenberry I was never met with criticism, only support. Dr. Fortenberry could see where I needed to improve and would sit down multiple times a week with me to make sure I understood what I was learning.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

After graduation, I plan to attend medical school. My ultimate career goal is to become a forensic pathologist, and I believe that my major is setting me up quite well!

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you’d tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

 One thing I wish I knew as a freshman would be that it is okay to go out and make friends. I came to Ole Miss completely alone and was terrified to go out and meet new people. Since then, I have joined various programs within the community that have introduced me to so many amazing people who have changed my life for the better.
