Why did you choose to attend UM?

I would say I chose UM because I have never felt limited by UM. I never felt like I could not do anything at this university. From organizations that I am in, to the people I have met on a day-to-day basis, I truly feel like I am getting the most out of my education. I love UM with all my heart, and I am thankful that I have been shown so much love in return.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

I would tell a student that a Southern Studies major is what you make of it. Personally, when I tell someone that I am in SSouthern Sstudies, the first thing they ask is what I am going to do with that major. And I politely respond that I want to go to physical therapy school so I can improve patients health in the south. However, with a Southern Studies major, people can become lawyers, teachers, and more because a Southern Studies major is what you make out of it, not what your major makes out of you. You are not your major, which I feel like is a big misconception in college.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

The class that had the most impact on me was my Speech 105 class with Professor Kay Butler Barefoot because she truly cared about our experience and teaching us to get better at speaking professionally to each other.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

After graduation, I hope to go to physical therapy school either in Jackson or in Louisiana. I want to be in PT school for three years to earn my doctorate, and then I would love to either work on therapy for obese patients, in a hospital, or in a private practice. I am not completely sure yet exactly what I want to do after PT school, but I want to specialize in an area that helps others in the south.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

The biggest thing I wish I knew as an incoming freshman was never say no unless it is going to hurt you. I have made some of my best friends, had some of the most incredible experiences, and learned so much being at UM just from saying yes to opportunities offered to me. Take every opportunity you can if you want to because you never know where it will take you.
