Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose UM because of how welcoming the faculty is here. When visiting the campus, all the professors on staff expressed how much they care for me and want me to succeed. They will always be in your corner and will push you to succeed. Also, how could one not fall in love with our beautiful campus? There are so many opportunities on campus to put your name out in the professional world. If you want to be great at what you major in, UM is the place to get you there.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

I would say that it is very time-consuming. Most people think Music Education is an easy major to do, but it is not. There is a lot of time commitment involved with it. Yes, the professors help you out, but you must put in a lot of time. Even though this major is very demanding, it is very rewarding in the end.

Why is your department a special place?

The department is a special place because of our music chair, Professor Balach. She has cultivated a learning environment and pushes us to be great. She has built a community within the department that allows you to feel comfortable around everyone. I always know that I can go to anyone for help.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

Dr. Micah Everett is my lessons teacher at the University. He has always pushed me to do things that I thought I was never capable of doing. He has pushed me to do international competitions that I have succeeded in. I can say without a doubt that he really cares for me and is excited about my future. I always push myself to be a better musician because of him.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

My plan after graduation is to go to Graduate school in Music Performance. My end goal is to receive my PHD in Music Performance so I can teach at the collegiate level. I also want to perform in a major orchestra or military band.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

I wish I knew to get more involved as a freshman. Enjoy everything that UM gives you. Join all the clubs, organizations, etc. UM provides many resources for you, so might as well take as many as you can. It might be time-consuming, but it is totally worth it
