Meet Destiny Van

What is your major and why did you choose it?

Biochemistry. Although biochemistry is challenging, I believe it has provided a strong foundation that aligns well with the knowledge and skills required for success in dentistry. Biochemistry bridges the gap between biology medicine, and chemistry, providing students with a holistic understanding of the underlying principles governing physiological processes relevant to oral health. It has helped me develop a study pattern that is efficient due to the intense coursework that comes along with the classes. The friends I have made along the way and the experiences, good and bad, have made me the person I am today.

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession?

I had the opportunity to shadow an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center in high school, and I immediately fell in love with dentistry. Dentistry allows me to make a tangible difference in people's lives by promoting oral health and enhancing smiles. Helping patients achieve better dental health and confidence brings me a sense of fulfillment. Ultimately, the combination of my passion for helping others, my interest in science and medicine, and the opportunity for personal and professional growth led me to choose dentistry as my career path.

How has HPAO helped you?

Throughout my journey toward dentistry, I've been fortunate to receive invaluable support from mentors, advisors, and programs like HPAO. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my path and empowering me to pursue my passion for oral health and patient care. Dr. Taylor has helped me arrange a mock interview with Kelli Hutchens. I applied for the Mississippi Rural Dentist Scholarship Program, and that mock interview helped me tremendously. These practice sessions allowed me to refine my interview skills, receive constructive feedback, and gain confidence in articulating my qualifications and motivations for pursuing dentistry.

What is your most memorable experience working with HPAO?

I recently just found out that I made it into the undergraduate program for the Mississippi Rural Dental Scholarship program. HPAO's commitment to my success has extended beyond academic advising. They have offered unwavering support and encouragement as I strive to make a meaningful impact in dentistry. As I continue on this journey, I am grateful for the role that HPAO has played in helping me realize my aspirations and shaping me into the dentist I aspire to be. With their support, I am confident in my ability to contribute positively to dentistry and make a difference in the lives of others.

What are your career goals?

Once I finish dental school, I would like to work for a couple of years to gain experience. Then, I would like to open up my own dental practice in the future!

What is your favorite meal in Oxford?

My favorite meal in Oxford is Rice and Spice. I love their Thai tea, fried rice, and crab rangoon.

What are you the happiest doing when you are not studying?

When I'm not studying, I enjoy hanging out with my friends or doing something spontaneous. I love to play sports and keep active as well.

Where is your favorite study spot?

My favorite spot to study is the third floor of the library. I love that exercise room where you can walk and study at the same time.
