Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?
From the moment I stepped on campus, I could tell that both professors and fellow students truly enjoyed the environment that Ole Miss provides. This has been exemplified by the people around me going beyond normal expectations to show they care about me and my success.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?
Pursuing a forensic chemistry major is unique, catered towards problem-solving through research, and it will prepare me for the detail-oriented work that coincides with labs. An important part of forensic chemistry is being observant and knowing when and how to apply the knowledge that you learn in lecture to real-life scenarios.

Why is your department a special place?
There is truly nothing like the Chemistry and Biochemistry department at Ole Miss. The professors and staff are kind, always willing to help, and nurturing.

What professor or class has had the most impact on you?
The first class I ever took in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was Organic Chemistry. This class not only challenged me, but also inspired me. Organic Chemistry has been my favorite class in college because it allowed me to explore why and under what conditions electrons interact with each other. This fascinates me, and Dr. Rowland understood my interests and is always willing to reach for a different piece of text to give me more perspective and, in turn, better explanations.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you’d tell your past self (about the general college experience)?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Professors enjoy talking to students who are genuinely interested in their class. I frequently attend office hours, not only for Chemistry classes, but also for English, Biology, and even Criminal Justice classes, and these are my favorite times of the week!
