Meet Elizabeth Basha
What is your major and why did you choose it?
I initially chose biology because I liked it in high school and did not know what else to choose. However, as I progressed through my degree, I realized that I am right where I am supposed to be. I really enjoy the different aspects of biology that my degree covers, and I have enjoyed hands-on work in lab sections. I enjoy the material and feel as though many of the classes I’ve taken will help me in my future. I have also gotten to put some of my learning into practice by partaking in research in the biology department, and that has been another learning experience for which I am very grateful.
Why did you decide to pursue this health profession?
Working in healthcare settings and shadowing physicians affirmed my desire to serve others in the way that a physician can. I witnessed healthcare disparities in the MS Delta and it showed me the need that my home state has for physicians. I have witnessed the impact that a good physician can have on patients, which has moved me to want to impact others as a future physician. Through clinical work and serving others in my community, I have seen the universal need of people to be cared for and felt like this profession is the best way for me to contribute to that care.
How has HPAO helped you?
HPAO has been a very helpful resource for me in my pre-medical journey, especially since my junior year began. The mock MMIs hosted by the office are nerve-racking but extremely helpful. I have witnessed advisors in the HPAO go above and beyond for me and other students, and I am very thankful to have this office at Ole Miss. The HPAO has helped with making class schedules every semester and preparing for every aspect of the medical school application process—from advising me about involvement to hosting mock MMIs to giving MCAT advice and reviewing my application. Kelli read so much of my application very patiently and gave very helpful feedback each time I sent her something. She and Dr. Taylor have helped me tremendously by advising me through the process.
What is your most memorable experience working with HPAO?
Mississippi Day! It was fun to hang out with the advisors and other ambassadors and meet high schoolers from around the state and interact with locals! There’s a fun aspect with activities but also a more serious one when we give advice to high schoolers.
What are your career goals?
I hope to attend medical school and become a physician.
What is your favorite meal in Oxford?
