Why did you choose PPL as your major and what was the appeal of the Lott program?

I chose PPL as my major because I fell in love with the Trent Lott Leadership Institute while attending the Lott Leadership Institute for Rising 9th Graders. I’ve always wanted to attend law school, and I wanted a degree that would improve my research and comprehension skills. The Lott Program met my needs perfectly, and I have loved the connections and skills I have gained from my time here!

What are your career aspirations?

One thing I love about the Institute is how it has helped me successfully apply to internships and opportunities that have helped me define my career goals. I used to want to be a courtroom lawyer, but I’ve grown to appreciate the background work in law and policy much more throughout my time in the Institute. While I’m not sure what career path I’ll ultimately pursue, I know that the Trent Lott Leadership Institute has given me an invaluable foundation of skills and knowledge!

Is there a professor that has been particularly helpful to you?

Dr. Bass has been beyond helpful in my time in Lott! From helping me make my schedule during orientation to guiding me through changing my minors, she has made my experience in Lott possible! I’ve taken a class with her almost every semester because I learn a lot from her teaching style and class environment. I always encourage new students to take PPL 101 with her like I did!

What is a particularly meaningful way you have engaged in a community either on or off campus?

This past summer, I had the opportunity to work as a communications intern at the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office. During my time there, I had the chance to do research for and assemble promotional materials for the Mississippi Access for Maternal Assistance program. It’s a type of outreach I don’t usually have the chance to take part in, and it was an interesting way to see the impacts of policy!
