Why did you choose to attend UM?
The University of Mississippi has, in my opinion, the best foreign language program in the state. We have so many different language classes available with amazing professors and TAs who are native speakers of the languages you want to study. We are also the only university in the state to offer Japanese as a foreign language. Our linguistics program is filled with great research opportunities, due in no small part to the wonderful professors we have. Our campus consistently wins awards due to its breathtaking beauty. We have so many extracurricular activities and wonderful recreational facilities.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?
I think the most important thing to understand about a linguistic major is the flexibility it allows when learning other skills. It is a major that opens many paths outside of just Language study.

Why is your department a special place?
Our department is special because of the people. So many helpful faculty and peers who really make coming to the University of Mississippi an amazing experience due to their knowledge and willingness to share that knowledge with anyone who needs it.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?
This is a tough one because I have had the privilege to work under so many wonderful educators in my short time at UM. But if I had to pick one, it would definitely be Ochiai sensei, my Japanese instructor. Her classes are always engaging, and you are given so many opportunities inside and outside of class to use the language as much as you want. She is also an extremely kind and approachable person.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?
I hope with all my heart to live in Japan for multiple years and, at first, to become an English teacher. My end goal is for my Japanese language ability can improve to the point that I can become an interpreter in business settings, doing freelance work for large companies like Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo, just to name a few, or even put those skills to use in medical environments. I also love to draw and hope to make my own comic one day.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?
I wish I knew how important it is to find something that you actually have a passion. When I first started my college education, I was just going for something that had good job security and pay, not something I was actually interested in.
