Get to Know Grace Garneau

Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose to attend Ole Miss because it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone.

When and why did you choose your major/minor?

I chose Hospitality Management my senior year of highschool while I was working at a tennis club here in Oxford. I realized I loved the idea of making people happy and bringing them together to celebrate or even just to have a place away from home that they felt comfortable in and included.

What are your career goals?

I hope to work with events in some capacity, own a country/tennis club, and do something related to sales.

Is there a professor who has been particularly helpful to you?

Tameka Johnson isn’t one of my professors but she has been my academic advisor since sophomore year. She is such an encouragement to me and always has an answer to my questions. She’s truly a wonderful individual.

What has been a particularly meaningful way you have engaged in a community?

I began working at Dick’s Sporting Goods here in Oxford a little over a year ago and I have met some wonderful people while working there and have built a great community of coworkers who have become friends.

What do you like to do outside of school?

I love to work out, read, watch shows, bake, hang out with my friends and family, and spend time by the pool.

What are you binge watching/reading/listening to?

I just finished binge watching the second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty. It’s a great show.

What is your favorite place to eat in Oxford?

My favorite place to eat in Oxford is Tarasque Cucina.

What are some dream travel destinations (and why)?

I would love to visit Hawaii one day because I think it would be cool to learn to surf there.

What’s your favorite place to study on or off campus and why?

I love studying on my porch because it gives me a chance to be outside but also it’s quiet and I can focus.

Why is your department a special place?

My department is a special place because it is full of unique individuals all coming together to learn to serve others and provide experiences to people through hospitality.

What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM? (keep these short and brief)

  1. I love all the career opportunities you have with a hospitality management degree
  1. I love that we have internship hours built into our major so that we can gain hands on experience

  2. I like that we have some online classes so that we have flexibility in our schedules
