Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose to attend UM because I was immediately blown away with the culture and environment when I first stepped on campus. I felt welcome and as though I was already a part of something. I was confident that I could explore academic options as well as connect with like-minded people.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

I knew coming into college that Psychology was something I wanted to pursue long term. It was the only subject that held my attention and kept me curious. By partnering this with Criminal Justice, I was introduced to the world of criminal behavior and analysis. These together developed my desire to become a Criminal Psychologist/Analyst in the future. Recently, I have also explored the world of Legal Studies in order to have a better understanding and foundation in the legal realm.

What would you tell a high school student about your major?

I would tell a high school student that the major of Psychology is challenging, yet fruitful. Every class taken is extremely rewarding when the adequate amount of work is put in. If you are interested in this major, you will gain much knowledge about how the brain works and all of the different, intricate levels of what makes a person that particular person.

Why is your department a special place?

My department is a special place for a number of reasons. The main reason I would say, however, is that the professors truly care for all the students they come across. Each professor has been extremely intent on teaching me and ensuring that I understand it and am essentially prepared for the real world.

Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?

Psychology 365, also known as Environmental Psychology, with Dr. Jeff Bednark has been incredibly impactful on my life. We focus on the benefits of being in nature and focusing on using nature to our own benefit as well as putting in the work to conserve and reduce the usage of resources. My eyes have been opened to the long term benefits of being outdoors and the positive effects it has had on my personal life.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I plan to continue my education and work to receive my masters in Social Work. After this, I would like to earn my PhD in Psychology in the hopes of becoming a Criminal Psychologist and Analyst.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?

One thing I wish I had listened to when I was incoming freshman would be to work hard, and enjoy every single moment. Time passes quickly here, so soak up every opportunity.
