Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose to attend UM because of the environment. Living in Mississippi most of my life, I was around people who loved this school more than anything and when I came to visit, I understood what they meant.

When and why did you choose your major/minor?

I chose social work as my major because of who I am. I have always had this drive to want to help people in any way I can. With social work, you can help so many diverse groups of people and that is what I love about it.

What are your career goals?

After completing my B.S.W., I plan to go straight into my M.S.W. to improve my knowledge so I can help at the greatest level. I want to work with older adults in an assisted living facility for a few years before returning to school to get my Ph.D. with the goal of becoming a professor eventually.

Is there a professor who has been particularly helpful to you?

If there has been one professor that has really made an impact on me, it would have to be Dr. Saijun Zhang. I have had him for two courses and had him as a research advisor. The work that we have done together really impacted me and made me want to further pursue a Ph.D.

What has been a particularly meaningful way you have engaged in a community? (Either on or off campus?

The most meaningful way I have engaged in a community on campus is working with the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Through this organization I have been able to work with the Palmer Home, Oxford Police, and other organizations to reach out to the community to make an impact.

What do you like to do outside of school (hobbies/interests)?

I would say that the thing I do most outside of school is rock climbing. I started doing it about two years ago and I have loved it ever since. It is a good way for me to work out and also clear my mind.

What are you binge watching/reading/listening to?

I am always binge-watching Ted Lasso and The Office, these two shows are some of the funniest I have seen, and I think everyone should watch them.

What is your favorite place to eat in Oxford?

I love going to Big Bad Breakfast, the environment is always great, and the food is spectacular.

What are some dream travel destinations (and why?)

I have always wanted to travel to visit Machu Picchu. I think going to Peru to see the city and engage in that community would be awesome.

What’s your favorite place to study on or off campus and why?

I always study at the library, having access to everything they offer and being close to Starbucks is always great.

Why is your department a special place?

The people within the Social Work department are all very genuine. This makes it a very special place to me; I will deeply miss it when I graduate this upcoming spring.

What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM? (keep these short and brief).

  1. The professors. They are all so helpful, kind, and want the best for the students.
  2. My peers. I have made really good friends through my major and we all help each other in any way we can.
  3. The classes. The environment created between the professors and students when learning is unmatched. We are all very engaged and it really helps you absorb the information.
