Meet Jasmine
What does this scholarship award mean to you?
This scholarship was the motivation I needed to continuously work towards the finish line of this journey. College isn't easy and comes with an array of challenges; being awarded this scholarship through the School of Education has helped me to realize that those challenges whether great or small shape who you are once you complete the journey. This scholarship was the push I needed to continue towards the finish line.
What inspired you to pursue a degree at the School of Education?
I was inspired to pursue a degree in education because of my personal experience in high school. During my sophomore year of high school, I was diagnosed with epilepsy while being an athlete and trying to remain an honors student. Because of that experience, I want to instill in my future students that they can do anything with perseverance and being resilient.
Tell us about your community involvements and/or hobbies:
I am the leader of a generation group at my local church, Pleasant Hill MB Church of Hernando, MS. My family and I annually volunteer at the Memphis food bank. I also annually volunteer at my local church's vacation bible school during the summer. While in Oxford, I work with the YMCA after school program that is partnered with the university under the Family Literacy Program. My hobbies are working out, braiding/doing hair, playing sports, and reading.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduating I plan to get my master's degree in education then later get a master's in school counseling.
