Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose UM because as soon as I stepped on campus, I felt as if I was home. It was an easy decision, and once I got here, I was not disappointed. I have created a family here, and you will do the same. Not only that, but UM has provided many extracurricular and academic opportunities for me to pursue, which have taught me valuable skills that I will keep in my life and the workforce.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

Classics may not seem exciting to someone in high school, but being immersed in the Classical culture, like everyone's favorites Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece, is an experience like no other. Although it isn't exactly like the movies 300 or Percy Jackson, you do learn a lot about the cultures that inspired those movies. It is just as exciting.

Why is your department a special place?

Our department is a special place because we are small. Many may think that is not a great thing, but actually it allows you to get to know your professors on more than just a basic level and you have these connections for life. Being in a small department also allows you to know your peers better than you would in a 100-person lecture, and you can fully be immersed in the learning processes and materials.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

The most impactful class that I have experienced so far would be Latin. In Introductory Latin, Dr. Brad Cook did an amazing job of keeping everyone engaged and making sure we understood the basics of the Latin language. It is not as easy as one might think, and I appreciate his efforts in helping us succeed. It set my path for tackling the challenges of higher-level Latin.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

I plan on getting my Master's in Anthropology. After that major hurdle and starting my career, I plan on further education in my other areas of study and completing a Ph.D in Anthropology. I wish to specialize in Classical Archaeology and Psychological Anthropology, and then work on exploring mental health within the Classical world and how it affected the formation of great societies and empires.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

I wish I knew how scary college wasn't. In movies, it is this very picturesque collective, and to say I was intimidated was an understatement. Being a First-Generation college student did not help matters, but through the different programs I am in, like my major departments, FGSN (First-Gen Student Network), and The Pride of the South, I was able to make friendships and connections that dissolved the fear of not knowing what I was doing. I came to find out quickly that I would've regretted not coming to college.
