Get to Know Keely Butler

Why did you choose to attend UM?

I wanted to experience something different while also being close to home. I toured a lot of schools in the South and when I stepped onto campus in Oxford I knew I was home.

Why is your department a special place?

The Southern Studies department is a special place because of the people there. All of the faculty and staff have different areas of expertise and it is nearly impossible to have a question and someone not have an answer.

Can you tell me about a professor or a class you’ve taken that has had the most impact on you?

Doctor Darren Grem's Southern Studies 101 class solidified my decision to pursue this degree. I never thought I could learn so much in a 100-level class but I found myself asking tons of questions and looking forward to writing papers. It also helped me see the different ways the degree can be used in the work field and helped me see options for post-grad.

What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?

Going to my first football game! I was not prepared for the energy in the Grove at all and being able to experience it with new friends is a memory I will never forget.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

I hope to continue my education by getting a master's degree in something higher education related.

What is your go-to meal in Oxford?

Bolognese from Tarasque Cucina. It is the best place for Italian in Oxford.

What are some dream travel destinations?

The Amalfi Coast and Greece
