Why did you choose to attend UM?
I chose to attend the University of Mississippi because it offers one of the best liberal arts programs in the state and the country. They have also helped guide me toward opportunities I don't think I would have found anywhere else. My major is nursing, and I’ve had a great experience so far, utilizing the resources available, learning about the connected nursing school (UMMC), and working with professors who are dedicated to helping me grow and keep my passion.
What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?
I would tell someone that nursing is not an easy major—it requires hard work and dedication to excel in your classes. You get out what you put in when it comes to grades. However, I would also advise them not to overload themselves. It’s important to take things slow, pace yourself, and always consult with your advisor, the College of Liberal Arts, and the HPAO to ensure you stay on track.
Why is your department a special place?
My department is a special place because, even though I am a nursing major, I receive support from other pre-health majors and faculty. Everyone here is incredibly supportive and genuinely wants to see you succeed and grow. Within my major, there are also a plethora of opportunities, such as shadowing, joining clubs, and experiencing a different perspective through electives geared toward health professions.
What class or professor has had the most impact on you?
The professor who has impacted me the most is my microbiology professor, Dr. Legal. She was an exceptional instructor who made the class enjoyable. Although the course was challenging, she sent encouraging emails when I performed well on tests. We often talked after class, and she was always available to answer any questions I had, ensuring I fully understood the material to succeed.
What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?
I plan on attending nursing school and working for a couple years and later attend nurse practitioner school to one day open up my own clinic.
What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?
I would tell myself to do it scared, it won't be easy, but you will have amazing opportunities come your way and everything will work out in the end.
