Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?

I chose to attend the University of Mississippi because of the Mississippi Teacher Corps, which would allow me to gain two years of high-school teaching experience while working toward a master's degree that includes an alternate-route teaching certificate. Mississippi Teacher Corps also allows me to network with other educators, participate in summer school programs, and live in a new and fascinating region of the US.

What inspired you to pursue a degree at the School of Education?

I have been an educator for almost 20 years now, mostly working in higher education, as well as teaching English as a foreign language overseas. Both job markets are extremely competitive, especially for jobs that pay a living wage. A teaching certificate opens up many more opportunities to work both in North America and abroad. I am not sure where I will end up after graduation, but I am interested in using the teaching certificate to teach in prisons or in GED-style adult education, depending on which opportunities are available.

Tell us about your community involvements and/or hobbies:

I love to write, both academically and creatively. I play piano and cello, and I "play" guitar. I also lift weights and cook vegetarian food when I find the time, and I play with my cats when they yell at me. I'm looking forward to attending school events at Callaway High School, where I teach this year, to see my students do their hobbies! I also try to remain involved with the Ukrainian university where I worked during my Peace Corps service, since they are experiencing serious challenges due to the ongoing Russian invasion.
