Why did you choose to attend UM?

Initially, UM wasn't even on my radar for undergrad, but stepping onto campus changed everything. The intimate teacher to student ratio stood out immediately, emphasizing the potential for close relationships with professors—a crucial aspect, particularly for securing recommendation letters for law school. Moreover, the university's reputation for sending interns to DC caught my attention, aligning perfectly with my long standing desire of politics and policymaking. In the end, UM emerged as the clear choicee for me, offering not just an excellent academic environment, but also promising avenues to pursue my passions and aspirations.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

Choosing my major was deeply rooted in my desire to make a meaningful impact on the world. While it might sound cliché, it's a genuine aspiration of mine to leave society better than I found it. Growing up with an attorney and judge as a mother, I was immersed in discussions about law, politics, and government from an early age. This upbringing ignited a passion within me for understanding how systems work and how they can be improved to serve the greater good. Majoring in political science at UM felt like a natural progression of this passion. It wasn't just about following in my mother's footsteps; it was about embracing a field that offered me the tools to effect real change. Through my studies, I've come to realize that politics isn't just about parties and governance; it's a multifaceted discipline that directly shapes the development of societies and the lives of individuals within them. My education serves as the foundation for my journey toward making a difference in the world.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they're interested in pursuing that field of study?

Firstly, understand that political science isn't just about politics; it encompasses a wide range of subjects, including political theory, international relations, comparative politics, public policy, and more. So, if you have a passion for understanding how societies function, how power is wielded, and how policies are formulated and implemented, political science might be a great fit for you. Beyond the classroom, political science empowers you to engage with real-world challenges, from advocating for social justice to shaping public policy. It's a field that rewards passion, curiosity, and a commitment to making a difference in the world. Whether you aspire to work in government, international relations, advocacy, or journalism, a degree in Political Science opens doors to a multitude of fulfilling career paths where you can contribute to positive change and societal progress.

Why is your department a special place?

The political science department at the University of Mississippi holds a special place in my heart for several reasons. Firstly, the professors in this department are exceptionally open and communicative. I haven't encountered any other professors who are as genuinely invested in their students' success and well-being. They not only care about their students but actively seek out opportunities to engage with them, fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment. Secondly, there's a strong sense of camaraderie within the department. The professors not only work together but also share a genuine friendship that extends to their students. This creates a familial atmosphere where everyone feels valued and supported. Overall, my experience in the political science department has been incredibly positive, and I believe every student deserves to have a department as nurturing and caring as mine during their college journey.

What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM? (keep these short and brief).

  1. Engaging and supportive professors who genuinely care about their students.
  2. The sense of community within the department, where students and faculty alike feel like a family.
  3. Opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world application of political science concepts through internships and extracurricular activities.

What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?

One of my most memorable and enjoyable moments at UM has to be this class with Dr. Klinger. While it was a class in name, it became so much more—it's where I forged some of the strongest friendships of my life. I never expected that a class at UM would lead me to meet my best friends, but it did. The shared experiences, the camaraderie, and the bonds formed during this class are truly irreplaceable. It's a testament to the transformative power of education and the unexpected joys it can bring. Despite the passage of time and the many changes we've all experienced since our time at UM, these friendships have remained  strong. We've been there for each other through life's ups and downs, supporting and uplifting one another every step of the way. I'm immensely grateful for these friendships. The bond we formed during that class transcends mere acquaintances; they are truly my best friends, and I cherish them more than words can express.

What do you hope to do after you graduate? What are your career goals/ plans for postgraduation?

Post-graduation, my sights are set on attending law school as the next step in my journey towards becoming a criminal prosecutor and engaging in politics and policymaking. After completing law school, my plan is to gain practical experience and further refine my skills through legal practice, with a focus on criminal law. I aim to secure positions that allow me to work closely with experienced attorneys and prosecutors.  As I establish myself in the legal field, I intend to pursue opportunities to serve as a criminal prosecutor. Following law school and gaining experience as a criminal prosecutor, my long-term aspiration is to transition into a career in politics. Building upon my background in law and my experiences as a criminal prosecutor, I aim to enter the realm of public service with a focus on legislative or executive positions.

Apart from school, how do you spend your time in Oxford? What are your hobbies, favorite places to go, etc.?

Outside of school, I enjoy a variety of activities in Oxford that help me unwind and make the most of my free time. One of my favorite pastimes is hitting the gym, where I find both physical and mental rejuvenation. It's a great way to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. When I'm looking to socialize and have fun, you'll often find me on the square, exploring the vibrant atmosphere. Sunday nights are a highlight for me, as I love rounding off the weekend with a visit to yays with my girls after ststudying in the library.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

If I could go back and give advice to my incoming freshman self about the general college experience, it would be to prioritize getting involved. Joining clubs, organizations, and activities is the quickest way to make friends and build lasting connections. These friendships are invaluable and enrich your college experience in ways you can't imagine. Additionally, I'd remind myself not to spend too much time worrying about what others are doing. While socializing is important, ultimately, the main reason for being in college is to earn a degree. Finding a balance between academics and social life is key. It's okay to have fun and enjoy your time in college, but always remember your academic goals and prioritize your studies.
