What wellness topics are you most passionate about?
I am extremely passionate about physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. Physically I have seen a very close family member of mine struggle with anorexia nervosa and it was one of the hardest things our family went through. To see how her mental wellness created such a physical deterioration was eye opening. I wish then we had the tools to help her and talk with her before it got to the point it did and learned how important it was to check in on those people. She struggled with so many body image issues that ultimately took control and caused her body to start to shut down. Thankful for all the doctors that helped her recover and while she still struggles with it from time to time she too has found tools to overcome the flair ups that cause her to want to stop eating. I have also seen depression and anxiety take total control of my sister to the point of self harm and again I don’t wish that feeling upon anyway. Again, I wish my family and I were prepped better to handle and recognize these mental health cases and how to handle them early on. Over the years I have seen how important it is to learn how to be a peer educator and friend to those around us.
What is something you wish students knew about wellness resources on campus?
I wish students knew how much every single person working in the wellness resources on campus cares for every student on this campus. It can be so intimidating and I want all the students to know how loved and cared for they are. They already have a friend and helping hand in these campus resources before we will ever meet them. The resources aren’t here to tell them what’s wrong with them, it’s here to walk with them through their trials and victories. The people working in this programs do this as their job and spend their whole day wanting to help students not turn them away! So I hope as a peer educator they can come to gain trust for these campus resources and that they genuinely work to help students every day! It’s not embarrassing or silly to want to talk to someone! We want to talk with you too and would love to be able to check in on you and be there for you!
