Meet Madison Cantrell

What is your major and why did you choose it?

A biology major offers a pathway to explore the fascinating realm of life sciences, encompassing the study of living organisms, genetics, ecosystems, and the natural world. With a strong foundation in biology, individuals gain versatile skills applicable to various career fields, including healthcare, which has always been my dream. By pursuing a biology major, I can contribute to addressing real-world challenges, from disease prevention to conservation efforts, making a meaningful impact on society.

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession?

Choosing to pursue a career as a physician assistant came from my desire to work in healthcare, help others, and to have a direct impact on patient care. Desiring a direct impact on patient care is a fundamental motivation for me. As a PA, I will have the opportunity to be involved in various aspects of patient care, from conducting initial assessments and examinations to diagnosing illnesses, developing treatment plans, and providing ongoing care. This hands-on involvement allows me to see the immediate effects of my actions on patients' health and well-being. Being able to directly interact with patients, address their concerns, alleviate their symptoms, and guide them through their healthcare journey can be incredibly fulfilling and meaningful. The opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and communities is a driving force behind my decision to pursue this profession.

How has HPAO helped you?

HPAO has assisted me in various aspects of my professional journey, offering guidance, support, and resources to help me work towards achieving my career goals. HPAO has helped me to assess my skills, interests, and values, in order to identify different potential career paths in the medical field. Additionally, HPAO has always been there for me to offer encouragement and motivation as I navigated some of the hardships that undergraduate life has thrown my way. HPAO has truly helped me maximize my potential for success!

What is your most memorable experience working with HPAO?

My most memorable experience with HPAO was going into Dr. Stuart’s offices a hysterical wreck after not doing too well on my first BISC 160 test, frantic that I would never get into a professional school after if I did not have a 4.0 my entire college experience. Dr. Stuart comforted me and assured me everything was all going to be okay and things were going to be just fine and she was 100% right!

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to become a PA with specialty in Pediatric Oncology. Working in pediatric oncology will allow me to make a profound difference in the lives of children facing cancer, offering hope, support, and compassionate care during a challenging journey.
