Why did you choose to attend UM?
I chose to attend the University of Mississippi because it feels like home to me. My mother is the only college graduate in my family, and she is an alumna of UM. For me, UM seemed like the perfect place to thrive, grow, and pursue my passions. Not only is UM affordable, but it also has a beautiful campus and a tight-knit community that makes the university feel like home.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?
For students pursuing a major in English, I would tell them to be mentally prepared. Oxford, Mississippi, is the cornerstone of rich Southern literature. The faculty and staff are among the best of any university in the nation. I have thoroughly enjoyed every class and instructor I’ve had. Be prepared to expand your horizons, grow your knowledge, and write quite a few essays.

Why is your department a special place?
The English department is special because it is both broad and focused. Each professor is talented and dedicated to both their craft and their students. I feel that the English department is one of the most diverse departments at UM. English encompasses history, philosophy, creativity, film, nature, and several other topics. In no other major can you be so well-versed in so many things.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?
The most impactful class for me was English 199 in my freshman year with Professor Tom Franklin. Before his class, the extent of my writing was basic analysis essays. Embracing creativity and passion helped me discover my passion for creative writing. Participating in his class and developing my creative works convinced me that English and UM were the right fit for me.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?
After graduating I hope to go to law school and pursue criminal defense law. I have a passion for justice, rooted in my desire that everyone deserves proper representation and a fair trial. I would also like to write children's books in my spare time, so that I can inspire future generations.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?
As a freshman, I wish I had known that it’s okay not to participate in every function or attend every event. In your first year of college, it’s exciting to try new things, meet new people, and have new experiences. But it’s also okay to just say, “No, not this time.” There is great importance in setting boundaries and allowing yourself to take a break. I’d advise prioritizing your mental health—don’t drain yourself by doing what you think you’re obligated to do. Do what’s best for you.
