Meet Makayla
What does this scholarship award mean to you?
This scholarship award means a lot to me because as an out of state student there are many financial hardships when it comes to paying the cost of tuition, books, etc. While being a full time student, I also run my own online small business that helps me cover my educational costs. I work hard as a student and small business owner so I am extremely thankful to be receiving this scholarship because it not only recognizes me for my hard work and dedication, but also helps me cover my educational expenses.
Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?
I chose the University of Mississippi because of all the opportunities Ole Miss had to offer as a student. As soon as I stepped on campus for the first time I knew this was where I wanted to be. Ole Miss also had one of the best programs for CSD and Early Childhood Education and I knew instantly that coming here would allow me to achieve my goals.
What inspired you to pursue a degree at the School of Education?
Throughout my life, I have always loved working with children, so when it came time for me to decide on a career path I knew this was where I needed to be. So I decided to pursue a dual major in CSD and Early Childhood with an emphasis in Special education so I could help children reach their full potential.
Tell us about your community involvements and/or hobbies:
Within the Oxford community, I am involved in many things. Twice a month I volunteer with Second Chance Animal Alliance at their adoption events to help find shelter animals a new home. I also volunteer with my sorority Sigma Phi Lambda in many service projects throughout the community as well.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After Graduation I plan to attend grad school to get my master's in Communicative Sciences and Disorders and Early Childhood. My goal is to become a pediatric SLP for special needs children while also obtaining a license in ASL interpreting and child life specialty. I would love to work closely with children who are impacted by disabilities and advocate for a more inclusive education environment where their individual needs are met, while still providing them with the opportunity to learn and be a kid in traditional classrooms.
