Why did you choose to attend UM?

I fell in love with UM the second I stepped foot here. I also fell in love with the community and more specifically the Department of Theatre and Film. The family there was so kind and welcoming and made me feel at home from the beginning.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

I’ve always loved performing and knew it was something I wanted to pursue when I got older. It was really no question once I found out that it was a possibility.

What would you tell a high school student about your major?

I would tell him to brace for impact! I’ve been very busy since I stepped on campus in the fall of 2021, being involved in multiple shows every semester. It’s a lot to balance on top of class, but as long as you keep that hunger and drive, you’ll have the best time of your life.

Why is your department a special place?

Our department has a unique way of making people feel at home. Our professors are intentional about getting to know you as a performer and a person. They are there for you when you need them, whether it’s for audition help or just advice about the crazy world of entertainment.

It is also very easy to get involved in this department. They are always looking for people to audition and/or help out with shows, even the freshmen. This was super pivotal for me as I was able to make friends with people from every class my freshman year. All in all, it’s a giant family here and I’m so happy to be a part of it.

Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?

John Carden. John is one of our musical theatre professors and specializes in the voice. He is also my vocal coach. He has gone above and beyond in being a good professor and mentor. He is always willing to help out whenever you ask. He has even given up lunch hours to help with audition prep or to just give advice. John is an excellent human and this University is so lucky to have people like him.

What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?

I would say our performance of Into the Woods in the fall of 2022. Specifically the Saturday night show. That particular show reminded me why I love theatre so much. The sold out audience was full of friends, family, and theatre fans. And I’ll never forget when Don Waller (who was playing the prince) made the audience laugh for maybe 5 minutes straight. It was an incredible showing of acting and crowd control. Even though I wasn’t even on stage, I will never forget that moment.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

My plans after I graduate are to move to New York City and pursue my career as a professional actor! Obviously, for any stage actor, the big goal/dream is Broadway. But as long as I am able to sustain a happy life and I get to continue to do what I love doing (performing) then my goals will be met.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?

Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to be forgiving (with yourself and others). This is a lot of new information and life experience being thrown at you quickly, so just be patient and forgiving.
