Why did you choose to attend UM?

The financial aid and scholarships I was offered were very generous and it was the best option available to me in order to pursue my goals.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

I went into college wanting to be an interpreter and was accepted into the Croft Institute. I'm no longer enrolled in Croft because of some conflicts of expectations, but I still plan to pursue a career as a translator through studying linguistics and languages. I changed majors going into the spring of my junior year.

What would you tell a high school student about your major?

Linguistics absolutely has something for everybody. All of my friends in the major all have different interests that attracted us to it, whether it's entomology, history of languages, or a love of grammars (like me!). Linguistics is a good major to couple with something else, like a language or a separate minor to prepare you for the work force or graduate plans.

Why is your department a special place?

Everyone in Modern Languages is really passionate about what they study and wants to see you succeed. Even when their material is hard or you're struggling, they're always willing to help you. There's also so many different languages and subfields represented within the Department of Modern Languages that feels so special.

Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?

There's so many! But I would say my Russian professors Dr. Iepuri and Dr. Karakozova have had the biggest impact on me. I've been in their classes since my first day of college and I can't imagine what my college experience would look like without them

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

I am currently applying to the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program in Kazakhstan. I plan to receive my Master's Degree in Translation and Interpretation and pursue a career as a translator.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?

Work and getting everything done is important, but put a little more priority into new experiences and making memories with friends. College only lasts for so long so take advantage of living in the same place as your friends.
