Meet Olivia

What is your major and why did you choose it?

I have always been fascinated with the mind and how the connection between mind and body coexist. I feel as though a lot of psychological aspects correlate with bodily autonomy and explains a lot of the how’s and why’s people ask. I feel like it gives me a back bone for understanding more clearly why we do what we do not solely based off of the body itself but also the mind. For interdisciplinary studies, it is made of my two minors; Neuroscience and Spanish! To me being able to communicate with others who may not know English is something I have dreamt of. It will allow me to communicate more effectively and efficiently with those who may not understand English when seeking care. And like I said above, neuroscience is something that I feel can explain a lot of conditions within the body and I only hope to fully gain more knowledge on how differently people’s mindsets operate.

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession?

Being able to provide the best care to others is something I am extremely passionate about. I went to Guatemala in December of 22’ and it really hit home for me. Providing the basic standards of care for everyone is something I knew I was called to do, even those who are struggling. I hope to impact every person’s life for the better when they are under my care.

How has HPAO helped you?

Dr. Bilbo has provided answers to everything that I have questioned about nursing. He has allowed me to get clear and concise answers when I was absolutely lost. He also provided me with everything I need to know about taking on an accelerated nursing program and what I need to complete before applying to any programs. Also when I was pre med, I was able to meet with Mrs. Hutchins and discuss everything I needed to do starting from shadowing to what different things could make me stand out on an application.

What is your most memorable experience working with HPAO?

When I met Dr. Bilbo and he assured me that no matter the anxiety I experience throughout this process he is there for me. To talk about absolutely anything. The process of applying to nursing schools and finding the correct one for you is extremely stressful. He made me feel heard and reassured that I can do this.

What are your career goals?

To provide the best care possible to patients. I want to make sure everyone is heard and understood when expressing concerns. I believe it is important to every person being taken care of is comfortable as well. I want to be that friendly face that can make a scary situation more bearable. I also hope to continue gaining knowledge while being a nurse. This career is a space that I know I will be challenged in and where I can grow and learn while doing what I love, helping others.
