Why did you choose to attend UM?

I chose the University of Mississippi because it offers the perfect combination of a strong, supportive community and exceptional academic opportunities. From the moment I stepped on campus, I was struck by the warmth of the UM community. It’s clear that students, faculty, and staff are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and supported, which is something I was looking for in a university.
In addition to the community, the University of Mississippi provides incredible educational opportunities that align with my personal and academic goals. The diverse range of programs and the emphasis on interdisciplinary learning made it clear to me that UM offers the kind of well-rounded education that I was seeking. Whether in the classroom or through extracurricular activities, I feel confident that I will be challenged and encouraged to grow as a student and an individual.
Another major factor in my decision was the opportunity to be involved with the Trent Lott Institute for Public Policy. The Institute’s focus on promoting good governance, civic engagement, and public policy is something that deeply resonates with my aspirations. I am excited about the possibility of engaging in research and internships that will allow me to contribute to real-world policy solutions while learning from experts in the field. The resources and opportunities provided by the Trent Lott Institute will help me develop the skills and knowledge necessary to make an impact in the world of public service.
Together, these factors made the University of Mississippi the ideal choice for me, and I’m excited to continue my academic journey here, knowing that I will be part of a community that encourages personal and professional growth while offering invaluable resources to help me succeed.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?

Public Policy Leadership and Southern Studies are both challenging majors in their own unique ways. Public Policy Leadership requires students to engage deeply with complex issues, critical thinking, and real-world problem-solving, while Southern Studies dives into the history, culture, and societal dynamics of the American South, demanding thoughtful analysis and reflection. However, both programs are supported by dedicated professors and the resources offered by the respective institutes, which provide students with the tools, mentorship, and guidance they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom. These resources help students navigate the challenges of their studies while preparing them for impactful careers in their fields.

What class or professor has had the most impact on you?

One of my favorite classes has been Public Policy 101. While the coursework can be rigorous, it’s incredibly rewarding because it pushes you to think outside the box and explore new ways of understanding society and the laws that govern it. The class challenges you to look beyond surface-level issues, encouraging critical thinking and creative problem-solving, which makes the subject matter both engaging and thought-provoking. It’s a great introduction to the world of public policy and a fantastic way to dive into the complexities of how laws and policies impact our daily lives.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?

My career goal is to attend law school and become an advocacy lawyer focused on children with disabilities. I am passionate about using the law to ensure that all children, regardless of their challenges, have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. I aim to advocate for their rights, fight for better policies, and ensure they receive the protection and opportunities they deserve.

I would tell my incoming college self to embrace every opportunity to build friendships and connections. College is an incredible time to meet people who will support you both academically and socially, and these relationships can truly help you excel. The connections you make will not only enhance your college experience but also play a vital role in your personal and professional growth. It’s important to remember that the people you meet along the way will help you navigate challenges, celebrate your successes, and shape who you become.
