Meet Savannah

What does this scholarship award mean to you?

This scholarship means a lot to me because I have worked all summer teaching at a montessori school and being a cashier at a restaurant to help pay for my master's. Money adds up really fast in college.

Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?

I chose to attend the University of Mississippi to further my education in elementary education. I wanted to continue at the university because I love the environment, the friends I have made, and the professors.

Tell us about a favorite memory, professor, and/or academic course during your time at the School of Education:

My favorite memory was when Dr. Lane Gauthier showed up outside of Guyton to watch me take my band pictures. After my pictures, he came up and wanted to take a picture with me to put in his office. It just showed how much the professors at the University of Mississippi care for their students. It really meant a lot, and that is the kind of teacher I want to be for my own students.

What inspired you to pursue a degree at the School of Education?

It was close to home, and I have always been an Ole Miss fan. I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was little so it just made sense to save money going close to home.

Tell us about your community involvements and/or hobbies:

I was a transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College. I have been in band all four years of college, including the Pride of the South. I was a Luckyday Scholar for two years and a Chancellor’s Leadership Scholar for one year.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to find a 2nd grade teaching position in Mississippi.
