Why did you choose to attend UM?
When looking at schools my biggest wish was to find a place with a lot of school spirit, and I fell in love with the community the second I stepped foot on campus! The students, professors, and Oxford residents are some of the kindest people I have ever met!
When and how did you choose your major/minor?
I was originally a Social Work major but then I took AH 201 to fulfill one of my basic requirements and I have never looked back! I have always been fascinated by history but with Art History you form a personal connection through the objects. The biggest thrill is finding out the hidden story behind a work or the artist! Wanting to understand more about the museum world, and hopefully work at one in the future, I thought Museum Studies would be the perfect fit and I have really enjoyed it as I feel my coursework has helped prepare me for the future.
What would you tell a high school student about your major?
You are going to write a lot of essays and with that comes a lot of research. My biggest piece of advice is be interested in your topics and don’t be afraid to dig deep! Also, be comfortable in forming your own thoughts and opinions as it tends to take you further in your studies!
Why is your department a special place?
The people. We are a small and caring community! Everyone you meet (students and teachers) truly want to see you grow and succeed!
Can you tell me about a professor or a class you’ve taken that has had the most impact on you?
I would say all my classes within the department have been amazing though last semester I took History of Photography with Dr. Belden-Adams and I really enjoyed the class. I really saw how photography has impacted our current day. There is also a lot of controversy within its history. I definitely recommend the class to any Art History major. For me personally, any class with Dr. Belden-Adams is worth it as her passion shines through!
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
I would love to work at a gallery or museum as either a gallery assistant or curatorial assistant back in Texas, though I am open minded. As long as I am surrounded by art I will be excited to wake up in the morning!
What are some dream travel destinations?
Southeast Asia!
What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?
Go into your general education classes with an open mind. You never know what you may end up being interested in and who knows you may even change your major like I did!
