Meet Skylar Jacobs

What is your major and why did you choose it?

Choosing psychology as my major at Ole Miss, particularly on the pre-occupational therapy track, was a strategic decision driven by my career aspirations in Occupational Therapy. Psychology provides a foundation in understanding human behavior and cognitive processes, which are crucial in effectively addressing the psychosocial aspects of rehabilitation. This knowledge base will enable me to better comprehend the challenges that individuals face when their daily lives are disrupted by physical or cognitive impairments. Studying psychology will equip me with the skills necessary to address future patients of mine. This is vital not only to improve physical abilities but also to enhance overall well-being and quality of life. Moreover, the comprehensive understanding of human development, motivation, and behavior that psychology offers will be invaluable in creating personalized therapy plans that are both effective and empathetic. I also have a genuine interest in learning more about the mind and body.

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession?

My interest in Occupational Therapy initially stemmed from my interest for Physical Therapy. My perspective shifted during my duel credit psychology class in high school, when a guest speaker, a student in Occupational Therapy, came to talk to my class about her career field. She highlighted the focus on fine motor skills and the similarities to Physical Therapy, which piqued my interest. What truly captivated me was her explanation of the diverse specializations within Occupational Therapy. This variety seemed both challenging and rewarding, prompting me to pursue further shadowing experiences with different Occupational Therapists. Through these experiences, I encountered inspiring stories and observed firsthand the impact of enhancing patient independence. This aspect of Occupational Therapy, enabling individuals to regain and improve their independence, solidified my decision to pursue a career in this field.

How has HPAO helped you?

The Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO) has been so helpful in guiding my academic and career. Their support has been pivotal in helping me select the most suitable major and minor to align with my interests. My advisor, Meredith Pyle, provided guidance on how to integrate a minor in Sign Language Interpreting into my Pre-Occupational Therapy track. This minor not only enhances my skill set but also significantly enriches my resume, setting me apart in the competitive field of Occupational Therapy. I am not only on track to achieving my academic goals but am also well on my way to fulfilling my ambition of becoming a sign language interpreter. This will undoubtedly complement my role as an Occupational Therapist by allowing me to better serve in diverse communities in the future.

What is your most memorable experience working with HPAO?

My most memorable encounter with HPAO actually occurred during my junior year of high school, when I began exploring potential colleges and career paths. While attending a college fair, I was drawn to the HPAO booth, where I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Sovent Taylor. His genuine enthusiasm for my interest in Occupational Therapy left a lasting impression on me. Dr. Taylor's encouragement reinforced my interest to pursue occupational therapy as a career. His passion for the field, and healthcare in general gave me confidence in my decision to attend Ole Miss. Looking ahead, I am eager to use the resources and support offered by the HPAO office as I navigate the application process for Occupational Therapy schools.

What are your career goals?

I have career goals of becoming a licensed Occupational Therapist. At Ole Miss, I aim to earn my bachelor's degree in psychology and complete my American Sign Language Interpreting minor. I aspire to obtain certification as an ASL interpreter, to practice communication and inclusivity within diverse communities. Continuing my academic pursuit, I envision pursuing a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy, in order to become a licensed Occupational Therapist. I am committed to ongoing professional development and strive to make a meaningful impact in many lives.
