  • About

My name is Sydney Davis, and I am a senior at the University of Mississippi. I am a Dietetics and Nutrition major with minors in Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry. I hope to attend medical school after graduating from the university this spring. I am so excited to be an ambassador for the School of Applied Science, and I hope I can convey to potential students how incredible this department truly is!

Why did you choose to attend UM?

My parents and both of my siblings attended the University of Mississippi, so I grew up seeing all the amazing aspects of Ole Miss. This school brings people together and creates an uplifting environment to allow students to succeed. I knew what amazing opportunities this school had to offer, so it was an easy decision to choose Ole Miss.

When and why did you choose your major/minor?

I chose to major in Dietetics and Nutrition at the beginning of sophomore year. Being a multi-sport athlete in high school I always wanted to learn about the ways that proper nutrition could benefit my athletic performance which drove my initial interest in the field of nutrition. This interest has only grown since taking the nutrition courses at Ole Miss.

What are your career goals?

I plan to attend medical school after college. Although I do not know which specialty I want to pursue, my goal is to become a surgeon.

Is there a professor who has been particularly helpful to you?

Mrs. Jurss was an extremely helpful professor to me in the Dietetics and Nutrition department. Her knowledge of the field was incredibly useful, and I really enjoy her teaching style.

What has been a particularly meaningful way you have engaged in a community?

I participate in an organization called More than a Meal which packages leftover food from sorority and fraternity houses each Friday. We then take them to various locations around Oxford for people in need.

What do you like to do outside of school (hobbies/interests)?

Outside of school, I enjoy exercising, cooking, and travelling!

What are you binge watching/reading/listening to?

I am currently binge watching the tv show Gilmore Girls. This is probably the fifth time I have seen the series, but I never get tired of it!

What is your favorite place to eat in Oxford?

My favorite restaurant in Oxford would have to be either Tarasque or Jensei!

Why is your department a special place?

Each professor within my department truly wants their students to succeed. They provide so many resources that I can tap into to further my career upon graduating from the university.

What are some dream travel destinations (and why?)

I love to travel and see the different cultures of the world. I studied abroad last summer in Greece and have been to many countries in Europe. My next dream destination is Thailand. I have never been to Asia before, and every picture that I see looks so beautiful.

What's your favorite place to study on or off campus and why?

I love to study at the Graduate which is a hotel right off the square. It is such a cozy space that is always filled with students. They have an outdoor seating area which is an amazing place to study when the weather is nice. They also have a restaurant/coffee bar!

What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM? (keep these short and brief).

  1. The community within the dietetics and nutrition department is unmatched! I have yet to encounter a professor who was not eager to help me in any way possible.

  2. I love the diversity within my major. There are so many professions that people can explore upon graduating with a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition.

  3. Each class within the department of Nutrition and Hospitality management is a great size. This has allowed me to form real relationships with my classmates and professors each semester.
