Why did you choose to attend UM?
I chose to attend the University of Mississippi because it felt like a place where I could grow academically, personally, and professionally while still feeling supported. From the moment I visited campus, I could tell there was something special about the community here—people were friendly, the environment was welcoming, and the opportunities seemed endless. Programs like FASTrack, the Lott Leadership Institute, and various mentorship opportunities showed me that this university invests in its students' success from day one. I also wanted a school that valued leadership, service, and public policy, and UM checked every box. It’s a place where I knew I could challenge myself, get involved, and make a real impact both on campus and beyond.
What can you tell a high school student about your FASTrack experience?
I’d tell a high school student that joining FASTrack was one of the best decisions I made coming into college. It gave me a strong foundation and a real sense of community during a time when everything felt new and a little overwhelming. Being part of a smaller learning group helped me transition from high school to college smoothly because I had built-in support—not just from professors and advisors who genuinely cared, but also from classmates I got to know well in my cohort.
FASTrack made a big school feel smaller. We had classes together, check-ins, and access to people who were committed to seeing us succeed. I always felt like I had someone to go to—whether I needed academic help or just someone to talk to. The program also helped me build confidence. I learned how to advocate for myself, manage my time better, and take advantage of the resources around me.
So if you’re a high school student nervous about that jump from high school to college, I’d definitely recommend looking into FASTrack. It’ll set you up for success—academically, socially, and personally. You don’t have to do college alone, and this program makes sure you won’t.
What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?
One thing I wish I knew as an incoming freshman is that it’s okay to slow down and take a breath—everything doesn't have to happen at once. When I first got to college, I felt this pressure to immediately prove myself, join every club, make the perfect friend group, and have my whole future figured out. I thought if I wasn’t constantly “on go,” I’d fall behind or miss out.
If I could go back, I’d tell my past self: you don’t need to have it all together right away. It’s okay to take your time discovering who you are, what you care about, and where you want to make an impact. Growth doesn't come from doing everything—it comes from doing the right things for you. Don’t be afraid to set boundaries, protect your peace, and ask for help when you need it. College is a journey, not a sprint, and you’re allowed to grow through it at your own pace.
Also… eat something other than Chick-fil-A and go to office hours. Seriously.
