Q&A with William McCloud Andrews
Why did you choose to attend the University of Mississippi?
As someone who grew up in South Mississippi, I have always wanted to attend college in the state. But choosing which university to attend was a little more difficult. After touring the University of Mississippi and hearing about their programs, I was sold. Choosing Ole Miss was one of the defining moments of my life, and I am thankful every day that this is the place I chose.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they are interested in pursuing that field of study?
Studying political science is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. The classes that are offered are always interesting, and the professors are always helpful. If you are interested in any type of politics, domestic or international, I would recommend majoring in political science. Even if you are not dedicated to politics, you should take a political science class. Being able to learn about the workings of our country and the world is an invaluable resource.

What professor or class has had the most impact on you?
The class that has had the most impact on me was the International Politics of Nuclear Weapons taught by Dr. Nordstrom. This is one of the most interactive and interesting classes I have ever been a part of. Dr. Nordstrom presented the information in a way that made it extremely interesting and easy to digest, and the group projects brought me closer to my classmates. This is the class that inspired me to spend part of this summer abroad on Europe, and I would recommend it to anyone.

What do you hope to do after graduation? What are your career goals/plans?
After graduating from the University of Mississippi, I plan to attend law school. I want to get my Juris Doctor degree and practice law. I am unsure what type of law I want to practice, but I want to be able to help the members of my community. Thankfully, there are pre-law advisors for students to meet with who guide the students through the LSAT and law school applications. I am also a part of organizations that help my legal reasoning skills. At Ole Miss, there are opportunities for those who want to study law everywhere.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you’d tell your past self (about the general college experience)?
I would tell my freshman self to talk to everyone. Make friends in classes, join study groups, and make your college experience enjoyable! It is possible to excel academically while also having a social life. Making friends not only makes college life more enjoyable, but it also makes classes easier if you have people to review materials with.
