Pre-Freshman Summer in the Chinese Language Flagship
The Chinese Language Flagship Program begins in the summer before freshman year.

“I got to experience an intensive academic opportunity in the Chinese program where I was able to enjoy every part of it. When I look back, it all plays like a movie in my head: the laughter with my friends, with our mentors, and teachers. I learned so much about time management, self-motivation, and courage.”
Pre-Freshman Summer
Chinese Flagship students begin their Chinese studies before freshman year by taking the first year of Chinese coursework during the summer. Students earn 10 credit hours for these courses and begin freshman year at the sophomore level in Chinese. Students are offered scholarships from the Language Flagship and UM JumpStart for this program. The pre-freshman summer is open exclusively to Flagship students.
For more information, please email chinese@olemiss.edu.
Students take CHIN 111 during Summer Session I and CHIN 112 during Summer Session II. Each course is 5 credit hours. Classes take place Monday through Friday, 10AM – 2PM, with an hour break for lunch.

Flagship students attend at least one 30-minute one-on-one and paired tutoring session per week to practice speaking, vocabulary acquisition, and key grammar concepts.
Extracurricular Activities
Students attend regular activities, such as the weekly Chinese Table and culture club.
Housing
Students live in Burns Hall, one of UM’s contemporary residence halls. Transfer students and Oxford residents have the option to live off campus if they are not participating in JumpStart. Read more about Summer Housing.
Meals
Students primarily choose to eat on campus. The Rebel Market is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner during Summer Sessions I & II. Students may buy a meal plan at Orientation. Buying a meal plan is cheaper than paying cash at the Rebel Market; however, students should note that unused Summer meals will not roll over to a Fall meal plan.
JumpStart
Chinese Flagship students are encouraged to participate in JumpStart to take advantage of the generous scholarships it offers to each participant. Space is limited; students must apply via the UM Pre-College website. JumpStart students must live on campus, purchase the JumpStart meal plan and participate in all program activities. Though JumpStart requires students to take 6 credit hours per term, Chinese Flagship students have permission to enroll in the 5-hour Chinese course for each term.
JumpStart offers incoming freshmen the chance to begin their first year of college during the summer after they graduate from high school. The purpose of the program is to help students with their transition from high school to college life by immersing them in course rigor similar to what they will experience in their first Fall semester, supplemented with in-program activities that build academic skills and connect students to other programs and resources on the Ole Miss campus.
