Helping Students Define Next Steps: Academic Consultations
This consult provides time for a student to have 30 minutes to discuss their academic life with a learning specialist 1:1. A student may come in with specific questions related to approaches to studying for specific classes, strategies for time management, and necessary connections to academic support systems on campus like departmental tutoring, SI sessions, and student success peer tutoring
What to Expect & How to Prepare
Bringing a personal computer is advised so learning specialists can view Blackboard with the student and see specifically the progress a student is making in each course they are registered for during any semester.
We also recommend students bring their planner (if they have one), so that learning specialists can assist with time management skills.
These meetings are designed to help students identify their next steps. ASP may suggest students need to attend an academic workshop or make a follow-up appointment with an academic success coach. They may need to visit Student Disability Services in the Martindale-Cole building and apply for academic accommodations. They may need to access faculty office hours, departmental tutoring, or apply for student success peer tutoring while navigating a specific course. ASP has a wide range of strategies that learning specialists may refer students to during an academic consultation.
Academic Consultations are not content tutoring sessions, nor are they academic advising sessions. The aim of an academic consultation is to determine what a student’s next steps are to address academic issues students are facing.
