Cycling Opportunities

Whether for fitness, leisure, or commuting, cycling opportunities provide a chance to connect with the environment and explore new places.

The Oxford Cycling Club brings together a community of mountain and road cyclists, who work together to provide opportunities for safer and more enjoyable recreational cycling in and around Oxford, Mississippi. The primary purpose of the club is to help develop a more bicycle friendly infrastructure in Oxford. Oxford Cycling also seeks to promote the interests of recreational bicycling, bicycling as exercise, bicycle racing, bicycle safety and camaraderie among all cyclist. Oxford Cycling provides the opportunity for its members to have a unified voice in bicycle advocacy and the opportunity to participate in cycling activities on a regular basis.

By riding in groups, members enjoy bicycling in relative safety, with knowledgeable cyclists, and reap the rewards of friendship and encouragement. Oxford Cycling is open to cyclists of all ages and skill levels. To find group rides and connect with the Oxford Cycling group through their Facebook page.

On the University of Mississippi campus, this miles long trail has almost everything for the trail rider, from race-pace riders to weekend warriors, even to first-timers out on their brand new hybrids. Loops can be put together that will take half a day and rarely cover the same ground twice. Expert trail building (trained by IMBA) yields excellent use of topography and fun use of sustainable features. Connect with the Friends of Thacker Mountain Trails group through their Facebook page.

The Ole Miss Cycling Club is committed to promoting safe and accessible cycling on the Ole Miss campus and in the Oxford area.

No prior experience is required to join the club, and bikes can even be rented through Ole Miss Outdoors — so no gear purchases are ever required! Club members ride both road, mountain, and cyclocross. The Oxford area boasts great roads with light traffic, and there are two well-kept trail systems in town with miles of fun single- and double-track. Updates and events are posted regularly on both the club Facebook page, Ole Miss Cycling Club, and the local riding group’s Facebook page, Oxford Cycling.

Some members race collegiately through USA Cycling, but competition is not required to fulfill club duties. Experienced members enjoy riding with new and seasoned cyclists alike, teaching skills and maintenance, and showing visitors the best local routes. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the club via their email, olemisscyclingclub@gmail.com, with any questions!

Complete Streets in Oxford

Complete Streets are for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets make it easier to cross the streets, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations. In February 2015, the City of Oxford adopted a resolution to its existing complete streets policy, adopted in 2011. Access the policy here. By adopting this policy, the city recognizes its dedication to ensuring all users of the road (pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, etc.) travel safely.

Since this resolution was adopted, two complete streets pop-up projects have been implemented. The first was on University Avenue in July 2015, and the second is currently being implemented on Gertrude Ford Boulevard.
