STEM Experts (Pre-K-12)
STEM Experts is a unique opportunity in which the CMSE helps bring STEM Faculty and/or Ambassadors to a classroom for engaging lessons, dynamic demonstrations, and/or intriguing lectures.
UM STEM Experts Want to Help You Level Up Your Classroom
With the help of CMSE, you can harness the skills of UM STEM experts (faculty or STEM ambassadors), and enhance STEM experiences in your classroom.
STEM Demonstrations
The University of Mississippi STEM Ambassadors program involves current students from STEM departments on campus who travel to schools across Mississippi in order to share information and present engineering and physics demonstrations. The ambassadors hope to inspire K-12 students to pursue a STEM career.
Typically, the ambassadors would perform a demonstration of specific STEM concepts. Examples COULD include, but are not limited to: Physics Demonstrations, Earthquake Demonstrations, Robotics Demonstrations, etc.
STEM Guest Speaker
The University of Mississippi is privileged to have so many faculty and students with a variety of expertise. These individuals are happy to share their knowledge with you and your students.
If you are discussing a particular STEM topic and would like a guest speaker to visit your class(es), let us help you coordinate those efforts.
STEM Activities
These activities are meant to engage students in hands-on activities that we can bring to your classroom allowing students to explore STEM concepts.
STEM ambassadors can present these activities for you and your students in your classroom or can provide you with the necessary information to help you present the materials yourself.
Activities could include spaghetti tower challenges or STEM activities that relate math and science skills to the STEM professions.
What's the Best Way to Plan Ahead?
The CMSE staff members appreciate as much advance notice as possible. We recommend booking your visit at least 1 month in advance to organize and plan a successful exploration.
4 Steps to plan a successful STEM Exploration
- Determine potential dates, timing, and goals for the visit. (You will need this information before step two.)
- Submit a STEM Experts Reservation Request Form. After completing the reservation request, you will receive an email outlining your submission.
- After submitting the reservation request form, allow the CMSE at least two weeks to compile and confirm necessary logistics. During these two weeks, a CMSE staff member may reach out to you to clarify some information – please be attentive to the contact information you provided on the form.
- After logistics are finalized, you will receive an email confirming your reservation. The email will also request necessary documents, such as: photo release forms, student roster(s), principal agreement (if applicable), etc. Please note: this is not an exhaustive list. These documents are traditionally requested to be submitted at least two weeks prior to the STEM Experts’ arrival.
Center for Mathematics and Science Education
The Center for Mathematics and Science works to improve mathematics and science education in Mississippi by fostering interaction between academic and K-12 communities, support the implementation of research-based methods in the classroom, and promote interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
